Per la prima volta due italiani (Proff. Sergio Cerutti e Silvestro Micera) hanno ricevuto un importante riconoscimento dall'IEEE-Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS).

2009 Academic Career Achievement Award, che viene assegnato per "Outstanding contribution and achievement in the field of Biomedical Engineering as an educator, researcher, developer, or administrator who has had a distinguished career of twenty years or more in the field of biomedical engineering" al Prof. Sergio Cerutti, con la seguente motivazione: "For meritorious career in biomedical engineering research in the area of biomedical signal processing and the advancement of biomedical engineering education".

2009 Early Career Achievement Award, che viene assegnato per "Significant contributions to the field of biomedical engineering as evidenced by innovative research design, product development, patents, and/or publications made by an individual who is within 10 years of completing their highest degree at the time of the nomination" al Prof. Silvestro Micera, con la seguente motivazione: "For contributions on the development of implantable neuroprostheses and biomechatronic devices for the restoration of sensory-motor function in disabled people".
